What is Kundalini Yoga?

Kundalini yoga is a form of yoga that focuses on awakening the latent spiritual energy, called kundalini, symbolically represented as a serpent coiled at the base of the spine. It combines breathing techniques (pranayama), physical postures (asanas), meditation, mantras (sacred chants), and mudras (hand gestures) to awaken this energy and circulate it through the chakras (energy centers) along the spine.

I teach Kundalini yoga, often called the "yoga of awareness" because it aims to restore self-awareness by awakening Kundalini, the energy coiled at the base of the spine, and raising it to the crown of the head. This yoga primarily activates the nervous and glandular systems. The various breathing techniques (pranayama) also act as an energy booster, amplifying the effect of the postures. Kundalini is also called the "yoga of joy" because it brings a great deal of energy and also because it involves chanting! Chanting mantras is very liberating, raising the body's vibration and calming the mind. Singing these sacred sounds together brings comfort, joy, and a wealth of emotions.
